Slightly less expected, however, was the entry of the KSCA President’s XI into the last four, considering they put out defending champions Tamil Nadu Cricket Association along the way.

While the two KSCA teams will lock horns in one semifinal -- thus ensuring one local representation in the title round -- the other last-four encounter, also starting on Tuesday, pits last year’s runners-up Air India Sports Club against Dr DY Patil Sports Academy.

It was always on the cards after the first-day’s skirmishes that barring a miracle, there was no way the KSCA Colts were going to stymie the progress of the senior side at the Chinnaswamy stadium. In the event, the KSCA XI lost just one further wicket on Monday morning, cruising to 165 for two to complete an emphatic eight-wicket victory.

Overnight 106 for one in response to the Colts’ 162, KSCA XI needed less than an hour and a half, and a little over 21 overs, to knock off the remaining 57 runs. Right-handed opener KB Pawan kicked on from 46 to finish unbeaten on 79 (176b, 10x4, 1x6), while Deepak Chougule was dismissed by Abrar Kazi for 42, the only success for the Colts on day two.

At the IAF grounds, a lot of interest centred around whether Tamil Nadu could wend their way back into the contest after folding up for a paltry 180 against President’s XI. In their last round, Dinesh Kaarthick’s men had staged a stirring fightback after being dismissed by Orissa for 181, but there was no encore as the industry of opener Nitin Bhille and the belligerence of Devraj Patil carried the President’s XI through.

Beginning the day on 52 for one, President’s XI survived a few hiccups triggered largely by young left-arm spinner Aashik Srinivasan. The 16-year-old took four for 62, but President’s XI got over the line thanks to Bhille’s 44 (137b, 4x4) and Patil’s frenetic 52 (69b, 5x4). C Raghu’s men eventually finished at 212 for seven, their total bolstered by 30 penalty runs as the holders bowled three overs short.

Air India overwhelmed Railways Sports Promotion Board by 80 runs despite a century by Bhavik Thakkar (101, 128b, 12x4, 2x6), while left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdullah’s five for 18 powered DY Patil Academy to a 129-run rout of Kerala Cricket Association.

Brief scores: At Chinnaswamy stadium: KSCA Colts: 162 all out in 63.2 overs lt to KSCA XI: 165/2 in 57.1 overs (KB Pawan 79 n.o., CM Gautam 29, Deepak Chougule 42).

At IAF grounds: Tamil Nadu Cricket Association: 180 all out in 47 overs lt to KSCA President’s XI: 212/7 (incl 30 penalty runs) in 67.1 overs (Nitin Bhille 44, C Raghu 33, Devraj Patil 52; Aashik Srinivasan 4-62). Match reduced to 84 overs.

At NRA grounds: Dr DY Patil Cricket Academy: 252 all out in 71.5 overs (Shoaib Sheikh 42, Yogesh Takawale 80, Sarwesh Damle 52, Ryan Ninan 30; Niaz 6-38, Rakesh 2-59) bt Kerala Cricket Association: 116 all out in 41.5 overs (Sambashiva Sharma 32; Iqbal Abdullah 5-18). Match reduced to 77 overs a side, revised target 245.
