Prabhu Chavan, the BJP legislator found watching pictures of Priyanka Gandhi on his cell phone in the Assembly on Wednesday, was detained at Hyderabad airport on May 16, 2011, for carrying a revolver.

His arms licence was found to have lapsed and he was released after he established his identity. Chavan, elected twice to the Assembly, forayed into electoral politics after Aurad became a reserved constituency following the delimitation exercise. He hails from Bonthi Tanda of Aurad taluk and his family migrated to Mumbai insearch of livelihood.

Chavan was a scrap dealer and he forayed into politics after he came in contact with BJP strongman in Maharashtra, the late Gopinath Munde. It was Munde who helped Chavan get the ticket for contesting from Aurad. He is also a protege of former MLA Gundappa Vakil.
