FMCI hosts workshop on alternative commn

There were about 140 participants from Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences, Nitte College of Speech and Hearing, M V Shetty College of Speech and Hearing, KMC Mangalore and Fr Mullers. It was a workshop where a number of skills were taught to the participants through videos and interactive sessions, so as to make communication better for the children with speech and hearing deficiencies.

Consultant Speech Language Pathologist from Bangalore, Dr Preeja Balan, was the resource person for the workshop.Earlier, inaugurating the workshop, DDPI Moses Jayashekar said that the Education Department is already into action to empower these children. Coordinators appointed only for this job are attending to the problem and distribute instruments to such students. “There are about 1,300 schools covered under this project and in the year 2010-11, around 675 children were given instruments to overcome their disabilities,” he said.

He also invited Fr Muller College of Speech and Hearing department to colloborate with the Education Department in identifying and helping children with such impediments by organising camps and then conducting therapy sessions. On the other hand, Fr Muller College Administrator Rev Fr Denis D’Sa said that the department too is keen on this collaboration and will be approaching the DDPI for the official permission.
