Village accountant spared of dismissal

The Lokayukta police had trapped the village accountant B Narayana Gowda while allegedly taking Rs 100 bribe in 2002. The State government had subsequently handed over the investigation into the case to the Lokayukta.

An Additional Registrar, who was appointed as the inquiry officer to probe the case by the Lokayukta, stated in his report that there was no sufficient evidence to prove the charges against the village accountant and hence he cannot be held guilty, sources said.

The State anti-corruption ombudsman then filed a case against the village accountant under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

But he got acquitted in the case. Then the Upa Lokayukta in 2009 recommended the government to dismiss the village accountant from service on charges of taking bribe, sources said.

After a thorough discussion on the recommendation, the Cabinet found that the Upa Lokayukta has not cited reasons for taking such a harsh action and hence decided to reject it, sources said.
