Govt school buildings on verge of collapse in KGF

Authorities accused of ignoring threat to students
Last Updated 08 September 2011, 18:53 IST

The Government Higher Primary School at Robertsonpet, the First Grade College and the building which houses the Block Education Officer are in a dilapidated condition. If the Government fails to initiate any emergency action, then they are mishaps waiting to happen.

The condition of the buidlings have been noticed by the officers concerned. For these buildings are located in the prime areas of the town. The elected representatives, the officers of the Education Department and officers the City Municipal Council are aware of the damages that have occured in the buildings. But they are least bothered about their repair and have not even released funds for their repair.

A large number of children belonging to financially poor families from the surrounding areas attend the Government Higher Primary School. The roof of the school building has caved in at several places. Also, one part of the compound wall collapsed three to four years ago, while the remaining parts too are already shaky and the people have placed supporting boulders, to prevent the disaster.

The Department of Education is accused of forgoing the danger of the wall collapsing on children who play near it.

One end of the School has been converted into a public toilet and the grounds have become dumyards for the houses and shops nearby.

The Government First Grade College is adjacent to the Primary School. Without a building of its  own, the College is forced to organise classes in the Primary School rooms.

The Block Education Officer too does not have a workplace of his own and relies on the Primary School premises.

Officers of the Department of Public Education watch the struggle for survival and space day after day, in silence, as no number of letters or appeals yields results for the better.
