The recommendation came here at the end of a three-day international conference on ‘Women’s Literacy for Inclusive and Sustainable Development’, hosted by India. A total of 14 countries including Brazil, China, Indonesia, Egypt, Nigeria, Mexico, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal took part in the event.

The meet resolved to forge alliances for regional and sub-regional cooperation to meet the goals set particularly in the areas of capacity building, assessment protocol, training and research.

Participating countries reiterated the centrality of women’s literacy and lifelong education for inclusive and sustainable development, realising that promoting gender equality and empowerment of women were effective tools to combat poverty and to stimulate development to promote the values of humanity and peace. They acknowledged the importance of mainstreaming adult education to improve the literacy rate and quality of life and the need for higher resource allocation for the same.
