So much so when asked about the particular brand of humour that she endorses, she cracks up. “Colgate — I make everyone show their teeth!” she quips, adding, “In truth, I think that’s the funniest question ever. My job is just to make people laugh.”

Getting into the humour industry isn’t always easy, and Aditi is quick to admit this. “It’s not the kind of thing that you can just start off at home,” she explains.  However, she got lucky and made a niche for herself about one and a half years back, when she participated in an open mic night in her home town, Mumbai. Since then, there has been no turning back.

She also believes that the scope for stand-up comedy, and comedians who have made a mark for themselves in this field, is expanding in India by the day.

“The market for stand-up comedy has definitely increased many fold in the last few years. I think that as a nation, we’ve become a lot more confident about ourselves. Now, we know how to take a joke,” she explains.

Aditi will soon be in the City to perform the opening act of ‘Unladylike: The Pitfalls of Propriety”.

The show, which has been written by New York-based Radhika Vaz, an accomplished comedian, has been described as an edgy, politically-incorrect comedy which explores behavioural stereotypes of the ‘weaker sex’.

It also humorously exploits the dynamics between men and women in today’s society. About ‘Unladylike’, Aditi says that her stand-up comedy is focussed on the experiences of the modern-day Indian woman.

“I like to use cliched terms, so I would say that it is a no-holds-barred performance. I’m pretty confident that the audience in Bangalore will be receptive to this,” she adds.

She has never performed in Bangalore before but admits that she is definitely looking forward to the experience.

“I’ve been in touch with several of the local comedians over here. They have a lot of things to say about the audience in the City, and most of it is really lovely. They portray Bangalore as a City with an extremely metropolitan mentality— and this makes it the perfect market for stand-up comedy,” she says.

‘Unladylike: The Pitfalls of Propriety” is being held on September 15 at the Alliance Francaise at 8.30 pm, September 16 at the Jagriti Theatre in Whitefield at 8 pm and on September 17 at the Manchester United Restaurant in Koramangala at
8.30 pm.
