In their statement to police, Anjali's family members have further alleged that she took the extreme step as Amit did not keep his promise of marriage despite the two being in a 'live-in' relationship for long.

"Anjali's family members have said in their statement to the police that she had levelled false allegations against the senior IAF officials at the behest of Amit, following which, she faced ignominy of being the first IAF woman official to be court-martialled and ultimately dismissed from the service," Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rajesh Singh Chandel told PTI.

The police officer further said that according to Anjali's family members, her court-martial and the subsequent dismissal as well as Amit's 'false' promises of marriage led her to depression and ultimately made her commit suicide.

Anjali had accused her senior Air Force officers of sexually abusing her. However, she was dismissed by the IAF in February 2006, after the allegations she had levelled against the officers, were found to be false.

She was later dismissed from service and was found guilty on seven counts, including indiscipline, insubordination and financial misappropriation.

Anjali allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan at Amit's residence here on September 11.

Yesterday, Amit Gupta was arrested in connection with the alleged suicide. He was later produced in a court, which sent him to a judicial remand till September 26. Amit told police that he only knew her as his subordinate and was not having any other relationship with her.

An IAF team has also arrived here from Nagpur, where Amit was posted, to investigate the case separately.
