Activists of Raitha Sangha and district unit of Hasiru Sene were staging a protest demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in demand for implementation of various welfare measures, including irrigation projects, when police resorted to lathi-charge, following an exchange of heated words. Police had registered cases against 39 persons.

Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene had complained of police harassment, demanded an inquiry into the incident and severe action against those responsible for it. They had also demanded suitable compensation for the victims of lathi-charge. Regional commissioner Jayanthi heard from the victims and eye-witnesses on Thursday, the inquiry would continue on Friday too.

Members of Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene argued that the then deputy commissioner and superintendent of police took a wrong decision by ordering lathi-charge on peacefully agitating farmers.

Some eye-witnesses said the farmers were blocking the double road in the city by parking tractors, causing inconvenience to the public, so police resorted to mild lathi-charge.

Deputy commissioner K Amaranarayan, additional deputy commissioner H T Chandrasekhar, additional superintendent of police K H Chandrasekhar and assistant commissioner A B Basavaraju were present at the inquiry.
