Jayalalitha's bounty for students, housewives

“These should not be derided as freebies, but as unique welfare schemes to enable the economic uplift of the poor and the weaker sections,” Jayalalitha said at a huge function at Kakkalur in Thiruvallur district.

The schemes kick-started by ‘Amma’, in fulfillment of the party’s Assembly election manifesto, also included the distribution of cross-bred Jersey milch cows to rural poor and four goats/sheep to each household among the “poorest of the poor” across Tamil Nadu.

The special cash incentive scheme for students of 10th, 11th and Plus Two classes, of all Government schools aimed at drastically reducing school dropout rates was also launched on the occasion by Jayalalitha.

All these schemes involve a massive outlay of over Rs 2,350 crore this year.

While Rs 912 crore has been allotted this fiscal (2011-12), to provide free laptop computers to students in Government and aided educational institutions upwards of Class 10, to help them take advantage of the information technology revolution and enrich their knowledge, 9.12 lakh students would be covered under the scheme’s first phase this year.

Women beneficiaries covering 25 lakh families this year will each get a mixie, grinder and electric fan free in the first phase. These would help to “vastly reduce the women’s burden at home in their daily chores and give them an opportunity to turn their energies for self-improvement and community development,” Jayalalitha said, after giving away the first set to a woman beneficiary.
