Chira’s body is now in the cold storage of Victoria Hospital awaiting post-mortem. As per rule, a relative has to sign the necessary documents to give a go-ahead for the autopsy which is essential in case an undertrial dies inside the jail.

In this connection, the police had contacted the Nigerian embassy to reach out to his relatives in Nigeria for allowing the hospital authorities to do an autopsy so as to ascertain the cause of death.

Brother studying in City

Ironically, Chira’s brother, Daniel Chira, is in Bangalore pursuing higher studies, but he is not showing up.

“The day Okay Emmanuel died, we contacted his brother Daniel and he left soon after giving a statement - he has to arrange a flight to take the body to his hometown. But he hasn’t turned up yet. We have been repeatedly contacting him, but he is giving one excuse or the other. His signature on the papers will do,” said A V Lakshminarayana, the station house officer of Parappana Agrahara police station.

Chira was lodged in the Parappana Agrahara jail in connection with fake education certificates, based on which he was pursuing higher studies in a Koramangala-based college.

On September 13, he fell unconscious inside the jail, complaining of severe chest pain.
He was rushed to Nimhans, but could not be saved, said the police.
