Last Updated 17 September 2011, 16:46 IST

Deputy registrar of cooperatives P Ramakrishnegowda, who is trying the case following the order of Karnataka High Court based on a writ petition filed in 2007, said Lakshmithathachar did not depose before him.

Counsel for the accused Alhar appeared before the officer and asked for permission to continue the case in the absence of his client. He said Lakshmithathachar’s wife was being treated in a hospital for heart related illness.

However, the deputy registrar declined to grant permission, adjourned the hearing for October 18 and ordered personal appearance on that date.

It is alleged that Lakshmithathachar has misused a total of Rs 1.71 crore in 18 incidents. In 2007, the assistant commissioner of Pandavapura sub-division had probed the cases on directions from state government and deputy commissioner. He had reported to the deputy registrar and suggested adequate action against the accused. Lakshmithathachar had appealed against the action of the deputy registrar initiating action without serving him a notice. The high court had asked the deputy registrar to initiate action after issuing a notice in 2009.
