Vote on J&K MLA's mercy plea for Afzal on Sept 28

Last Updated 17 September 2011, 18:56 IST

This became clear on Saturday when the resolution along with six others was selected among 22 during the draw of lots in assembly secretariat. The resolution was submitted by an Independent MLA, Engineer Abdul Rashid, who would move it into the assembly. Rashid wants mercy to Guru on humanitarian grounds and a plea would be made to President Pratibha Patil.

The resolution is surely going to give a difficult time to the National Conference (NC) led coalition government in the state.  The NC is yet to take a decision on whether to support the resolution even as chief minister Omar Abdullah has communicated it to the Centre that hanging of Guru could deteriorate the situation in Kashmir.

The Congress has no option but to oppose the resolution. The BJP and other Jammu based parties would also oppose it. However, PDP, CPI (M) and other parties from Kashmir will support the resolution, it is learnt.
