Mehar sizzles on day one with 68

Mehar, niece of India’s only PGA Tour event winner Arjun Atwal, was in cruise mode right from the time she teed off at the Karnataka Golf Association, making mockery of the heavy course conditions with a blistering four-under 68.

Talented Vani Kapoor is placed second five strokes behind, while Tvesa Malik is third at 74 as much of the field -- except Mehar -- struggled to break par at the testing course that proved even more difficult following the heavy overnight rain.

Mehar, who has shone in parts since her junior days, kick-started the day with a birdie on the opening hole. She picked up strokes on the fourth and the sixth to take the turn at three-under.

More birdies continued to follow on the 12th, 15th and 16th holes as the 17-year-old went six-under with a flawless display of golf. However, just when it appeared she would retire to the clubhouse with an overwhelming lead, disaster struck. She bogeyed the 17th and 18th holes to end an otherwise fantastic round on a sad note.

Local lass Aditi, who just couldn’t find her rhythm in a disastrous opening round show, shot a 76 to lie tied sixth with Millie Saroha.

Aditi had bogeys on the second, fourth, sixth and eighth holes as well as a double bogey on the seventh. However, she bounced back with birdies on ninth and 17th.

Leading scores (after 18 holes): 68: Mehar Atwal; 73: Vani Kapoor; 74: Tvesa Malik; 75: Raksha Phadke, Rabiya Gill; 76: Aditi Ashok, Millie Saroha; 78: Anisha Padukone, Gurbani Singh; 80: Ridhima Dilawari, Sonam Chugh.
