Most stray pigs are found in slums and in some newly-added areas of the the BBMP.

Following complaints from the residents, the BBMP decided to act against the menace, before it was too late.

Joint Director of the Animal Husbandry Department of the Palike, Dr Parviz Ahmad Piran said it is estimated that there are about 1,500 stray pigs in the City.

“Many rear pigs but leave them astray. This is causing many problems in the City. We have decided to catch the stray pigs and sell in the market since they are consumed by a section of society,” said Dr Piran. The Palike expects revenue of Rs nine lakh by selling them.

The Palike will issue public notices to rearers against leaving pigs astray and will give 15 days time to take them back.

September 30 last date

The Palike has invited short-term tender through its e-procurement portal with September 30 being the last date.

The approximate value fixed for the tender is Rs three lakh to catch pigs. They would be sold in market, later.

Apart from rabies, stray pigs  have many zoonotic diseases which could be harmful to human being as well.
