Narayan Guru's birth anniversary celebrated

Idigas urge government holiday on Sept 18; cabinet berth

He was speaking at the 157th birth anniversary of Narayana Guru organised by Mysore and Chamarajnagar District Arya Idiga Sangha, Sri Narayana Guru Dharma Paripalana Yogam, Billava Sangha and other associations at Dasara exhibition grounds here.

He remembered Narayana Guru, the spiritual leader of Idigas as a leader who propagated the principle of unity and revolutionary thoughts. The spiritual guru became popular in Kerala through his reformist ideals to bring equality. He also voiced concern about injustice to Dalits, he said.

“His ideals should lead the society and every community in the path of progress and development. Hence, Idigas who have disintegrated into various castes and sects should unite,” he added.

MP Adagur H Vishwanath criticised the state government for allegedly creating rift among different castes and communities.

“The BJP-led government has made it a policy to divide and rule. It is time that backward communities come together to fight injustice,” he said.

Ganapathi Sachidananda, seer of Avadhoota Datta Peetha, inaugurated the day-long celebrations. He recalled the contributions of Naryan Guru and said he was among great social reformers in Kerala. A community can grow only when it is united, he said. Earlier, hundreds of women from the community took out a procession with the portrait of Narayana Guru. A band of cultural troupes accompanied the rally.

Seer of Arya Idiga Mahasamsthana Narayana Guru muttt Arya Renukananda graced. MLAs Belur Gopalakrishna, Satyanarayana, H S Shankaralinge Gowda, Kota Srinivasa Poojari, chairman of Karnataka Housing Board G T Devegowda and others were present.
