Injured Jacobs ruled out of CLT20

The 28-year-old from Klerksdorp in Transvaal had sustained an injury during training at the Chinnaswamy stadium on Sunday night, and stand-in skipper Harbhajan Singh said at the toss that the right-hander would play no further part in the competition.

Only on Saturday night against the Chennai Super Kings in Chennai, Jacobs completed 300 runs in CL T20 cricket, having played a stellar role last year for his home side Warriors when they went all the way to the finals last year in South Africa before being beaten by the Super Kings.

Jacobs sustained a leg injury during Sunday’s practice, though it is believed that it’s a hip injury that is keeping him out right now. Jacobs and left-handed Australian Aiden Blizzard were expected to be key figures for the Indians, already deprived of the services of regular skipper Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma, among others, and this is a setback they will struggle to cope with.

Kiwi all-rounder James Franklin was drafted into the playing eleven for Monday’s game against Trinidad & Tobago, with wicket-keeping duties being handed over to Ambati Rayudu. With two matches still left in the group phase after Monday’s skirmish, it was unclear if the Indians would requisition a replacement. Perhaps, in the worst-case scenario, they might have to summon the now-retired South African support staff duo of Shaun Pollock (mentor) and Jonty Rhodes (fielding coach)!

Injuries to Tendulkar, Rohit, Munaf Patel, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ali Murtuza and Suryakumar Yadav, coupled with contracted players Aditya Tare and Pawan Suyal, had forced the CL T20 Technical Committee to arrive at the extraordinary decision of allowing the Indians to field five overseas players in the playing eleven. Jacobs’ unavailability is unlikely to change that scenario, though it’s just the sort of unkind cut the Mumbai franchise could have done without.
