Gagan sets State record in 1500M freestyle

Surabhi touched the pad in 17 minutes 50.95 seconds to bag her third gold on the penultimate day of the meet, after her victories in the 200 and 800 freestyle events on Monday.

In the process, the 18-year-old went under the national record of 18:00.64 established by Richa Mishra of Police in 2007. Surabhi broke the nine-year-old State record of 18:36.11 created by V Sivaranjani of BAC.

Host swimmer Gagan, who won the 800 free with new meet record on the first day, had to ward off a stiff challenge from promising youngster Saurabh Sangvekar, edging out his club-mate to finish in 16:19.23. Saurabh timed 16:23.37 for the silver. Gagan obliterated the previous State mark of 16:53.31 set by Rohit R Havaldar of BAC in 2006.

Likith SP of BAC pulled off a sensational win by beating seasoned campaigner Aditya Roshan in the men’s 200M breaststroke. The 13-year-old National Junior champion (Group II) clocked 2:33.95 to overcome the Dolphin Aquatics swimmer, who claimed silver in 2:35.58.

But Aditya made amends by claiming the 50 breaststroke crown, scraping past Likith in 32.00 seconds flat.  Rehan Poncha completed a treble and his club-mate Pooja R Alva grabbed her fourth individual gold. After his wins in the 400 individual medley and 100 backstroke on Monday, Poncha, who faced strong resistance from Gagan in the butterfly segment of the 200 IM, powered past his rival in the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle segments to cruise to victory in 2:09.58.

Pooja, who won the 400M individual medley on Monday, bagged the 200 IM (2:32.22), 50 fly (30.95) and 100 fly (1:08.97) crowns on Tuesday for her fourth title.
