Does everyone need a mask?

According to R K Srivastava, director general of health services at the Union health ministry, masks have to be used selectively.

Symptomatic patients, care givers and those who handle the virus and the patient, including laboratory technicians, nurses, hospital staff and doctors, should only wear the mask.

Also, those who are being treated in home quarantine and other occupants of their house should wear mask. But there is absolutely no need for everybody to wear masks while going out. “There is a problem on the availability of masks. India is a big country with 110-crore population. If everybody wants two masks daily, no industry can provide,” he said.

On Wednesday, Union health ministry asked state drugs controllers to ensure that there is no hoarding and black marketing of masks. This is reportedly happening in many states as a result of which those who need the mask are not getting it.
Officials said N-95 masks are not recommended for the common man. The special N-95 is for doctors, nurses and technicians, while disposable surgical masks are will do for the common man.
