Kerala emerge champs

The hosts bagged 51 gold, 43 silver and 40 bronze medals pushing last year title holder Tamil Nadu to the second spot.

Tamil Nadu won 45 gold, 48 silver and 44 bronze medals while Karnataka, with 14 gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze, came third. The last day saw five records being re-written. MD Thara of Kerala (under-16, 1500M), MR Gunasundari of Tamil Nadu (under-18, discus throw), Lukmal Hakkim of Kerala in (under-18, 400M, J Preeth of Tamil Nadu (under-18, pole vault) and Akil Francis of Andhra Pradesh (under-20, 400M) came up with record shattering efforts to win gold.

Tamil Nadu’s L Suriya equalled the existing record in the 5000 metres in the girls’ under-20 category and her state-mate A Gokul Ravikumar did the same in boys’ under-16 section 200 metres.

Kerala also won the championship in five age groups -- U-16, U-18 and U-20 in girls’ category and boys’ U-14 and U-18 while Tamil Nadu won in the girls’ U-14 and boys’ U-16 and U-20 categories.
