Last Updated 11 May 2009, 17:50 IST

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje, on Monday, said that there were complaints that the ZP works allotted as piece contracts were not executed properly. In the previous year the government took the decision to make tender process compulsory for road works. A few ZPs moved the Karnataka High Court challenging the State’s order. The court upheld the state’s order.

The government decided to extend the same procedure for works related to supply of drinking water. Sinking of borewells, supplying water through tankers or any other work related to providing drinking water would be allotted after floating tenders. To a query, she said that her department had taken steps to supply water through tankers in 65 villages of Gulbarga, Kolar, Raichur and Belgaum districts. Officers at GP and TP have been asked to be in their offices at least four days in a week.

Appointing officers

The government has decided to appoint 5,628 development officers to look after development works at gram panchayat level. The government had requested the Indian Institute of Science to prepare question papers and conduct the examination for appointment of officers. As many as 5,628 officers would be appointed in three years. Two-third of them would be appointed in the present financial year, she said.
