'Small newspapers facing tough times'

He was speaking at the state-level conference of the district-level newspaper editors organised here. The government should support the newspapers for the sustenance and survival of small publications.

Newspapers are serving the society informing them about everything that is happening around, he said. Shalagar said the government should encourage and support the district level newspapers releasing advertisements from all the departments. Also, tender notification for any project above Rs one crore should be published in major district newspapers, he urged.

MP Chaluvarayaswamy opined that the government should take the issue on priority basis. The media should work without bias to gain the confidence of the readers and society, he said.

Veteran journalist Sudheendra Prasad criticised the union government for its proposed advertisement policy and said the policy would only ruin the small newspapers in the country.
