Udupi to host State-level GP reps' meet from December 9

The venue of the conference will be either MGM College grounds or Rajangana parking area.

Addressing a press meet, Organising Committee President Deviprasad Shetty said that the main aim of the conference was to discuss the means of strengthening the gram panchayats and decentralisation of power and panchayat raj system. The conference will have seminars to discuss on various aspects of gram panchayats.

The conference will also focus on problems of gram panchayats having a large number of tribals and are deprived of the facility. Gram panchayats are also losing their identity owing to the expansion of cities.

Experts, including former Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, Chairman of the Task Force for the Implementation of Third Finance Commission Report A G Kodgi, C Narayana Swami, Devaki Jain, Mahima Patel, Vimala Ramachandran, Chiranjeev Singh, T R Raghunandan, PGR Scindhia, Mumtaz Ali Khan, and Wilfred D’Souza will participate as resource persons, he said.

The conference will also discuss the recommendations of the Third State Finance Commission with regard to gram panchayats and also use of modern technology by the gram panchayats. Nearly 10,000 delegates will participate in the conference. An exhibition focussing on various aspects of rural life, rural products, and rural art will also be held.

Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Jagadish Shettar have bee invited to the conference on December 11. 

“We have already held preparatory meetings in 23 districts of the State to bring together gram panchayat members,” he said. The convention logo was released on the occasion.
