Sabarimala closes door to controversial ex-priest

Maheswararu, who was designated to take over as the tantri for the next one year beginning Monday, the first day of the Malayalam calendar, had reached the Sannidhanam accompanied by Mohanaru.

However, the guards stopped Mohanaru at the northern gate of the temple following a direction from the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) executive officer. Later, he was allowed to offer prayers at the temple.

Maheswararu initially refused to enter the temple without his son and stayed at the nearby Sabari guest house. However, he changed his mind later and reached the temple precincts.

The TDB said it could not permit Mohanaru to assist his father at Sabarimala as the controversies surrounding him over the “blackmailing” and Jayamala issues were yet to die down.

Mohanaru was barred from doing temple duties after his name figured in an alleged sex scandal.

One of the three traditional supreme priests of the temple, he had insisted that his alleged sexual escapades were part of a conspiracy to malign the temple.
Mohanaru is also alleged to have facilitated the entry of Kannada actress Jayamala into the sanctum sanctorum of the temple years ago, violating the temple tradition.
