EC raps BSY for remarks

CM promised loans to purchase cattle during roadshow

The EC said during a visit to Kollegal assembly constituency, which is going to polls on Tuesday along with four other constituencies in the State, the chief minister had made several promises in his roadshows including giving loans to farmers to purchase cows and buffaloes, approving schemes for Girijans and declaring certain districts in Chamarajnagar as drought-affected.

The EC had earlier issued a notice to the chief minister asking him to explain why action would not be taken against him for violating model code of conduct, which had come into effect from July 17, 2009.

Yeddyurappa in his reply said the programmes were already announced in the State’s budget in 2009-2010.

New promises
However, after watching the video coverage of the chief minister’s programmes the EC said the promise of providing loans to villagers from banks to buy cows/buffaloes and the promise to declare among others Chamarajnagar district, as drought-affected were new promises and was made to woo electorate. “Now the EC is of the considered opinion that you have indeed violated sub clauses (vi) (a) and (vi) (c) of clause (vii) of model code. The commission has decided to censure you for the willful violation of the aforesaid provisions of the model code and has advised you to be more careful in future,” the EC order said. Responding to the Election Commission censure, Yeddyurappa said here that he had not violated any code of conduct.

“During election campaign, I only referred to developmental schemes announced in this year’s budget and did not speak about any new scheme. However opposition party leaders have made these false allegations against me as they are afraid of losing out in the polls,” he said.
