Quraishi favours independent panel to appoint CEC

"I totally agree with you that an independent panel with prominent people, including the Leader of the Opposition should be asked to select the Chief Election Commissioner," Quraishi told Prabhu Chawla on 'Teekhi Baat' programme on IBN7.

He said the 'right to recall' option was not practical and if people were so impatient for change, then the term of the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha can be shortened to four years.

Quraishi also favoured raising the expenditure limit for candidates in an election. "But there has not been consensus on whether we should raise the limit or remove it altogether.

Parliament has to decide that. We say it should be increased," he said. Quraishi said it would be beneficial if all elections in the country could be held simultaneously.
