Dispute over widening halts road work

Last Updated 08 November 2011, 19:37 IST

As the dispute between authorities and the shop owners over road-widening is pending in the court, the authorities have not asphalted the stretch of the road between the government hospital and the bus station for years.

Legislator Dr M C Sudhakar said Rs two crore has been sanctioned for upgrading footpath.
The stretch of MG Road between Bagepalli Cross and Kolar Cross, which was also converted into two-lane, is in good condition. The stretch of same road here is in a bad shape with potholes dotting it and rainwater flaking off the tar. It turns into a pool of slush when it rains.

The motorists find it difficult to navigate through these potholes, especially when they overflow with rainwaters.

The authorities who have undertaken repairs of the roads in other areas, have not bothered to asphalt the stretch. Reason: Some building owners and traders along the stretch had approached the court, challenging acquisition of their land for road-widening. As the case is pending in the court and the Court has stayed the road work, the stretch was not touched, the authorities said.

But, residents urge that the authorities should relieve the pain of commuting on the bad stretch everyday by submitting relevant documents to the court and praying for vacating the stay.
