Other award winners are Dr M V Kamath, Dr B T Lalitha Nayak, Shreenath, B K Sumithra, Chidambara Rao Jambe, Pandavapura Ankegowda, and Machar Gopal Naik. The award carried a shawl, memento, citation, fruits and Rs 10,000 in cash. After presenting the awards, each of the winners were offered traditional arathi.
Reopen closed schools
Speaking at the valedictory, Sammelan President and Senior Researcher Dr M M Kalburgi said that the BJP government should reopen all those schools which were closed down after it came to power.
“Closure of Kannada medium schools was a big threat to the language. It is said that over 2,000 Kannada medium schools will be closed down in the State. The CM’s promise of not allowing closure of Kannada medium schools is not enough. The government should make efforts to reopen all the schools, which have been closed down over the last three years,” he urged elucidating that schools are closed citing the reason of shortage of students.
“There is a need to find out the reason for the poor attendance in Government schools. Mistakes in syllabus, lack of uniform language policy and lack of infrastructure in schools can be strong reasons for shortage of few students coming to schools,” he opined.
Dr Kalburgi said there was a need for experiment in language. There is a difference between spoken language and the written language.
“We have produced enough literature. However, there is no market for it. In this background, Kannada writers should learn more than one language. We need language expertise to reach our literature at the international level,” he added.
He said litterateurs are not only the part of literature but also part of the society. They should create awareness in the society.
Jnanpith awardee Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar was felicitated on the occasion. Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva, MLA Abhayachandra Jain, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, Jayasri Amaranth Shetty and others were present.
Cultural programmes
There were several cultural programmes to treat the delegates who participated in Nudisiri. Bharathnatyam-Koochipudi jugalbandhi by Shama Krishna and Anuradha Vikranth; Dance performace by Bhargavi Dance troupe of Udupi; ‘Nrithya sangama and dance ballet’ on ‘Sathyameva jayathe’ by Gana Nrithya Academy students, Mangalore, Dance ballet by the students of Sri Mookambika Nrithyalaya, Puttur; Folk songs by Malavalli Mahadeva Swamy and team; ‘Mathina Mantapa’ by Richard Louis and Mysore Anand; children play ‘Dhoom, dhoom suntaragali’; rendition of vachana and Keerthanas by Shivakumar Mahantha, Shimoga; Bharathnatyam ballet ‘Dashavathara’ by Chaitanya Nayak were some of the performances.
