Court orders CBI probe into NRHM scam

Court orders CBI probe into NRHM scam

The court passed the order on a PIL seeking a probe into the alleged scam by the central investigating agency, directing the CBI to complete the probe within four months and file a report. The order was a setback to the state government, which had vehemently opposed a CBI probe into the scam as suggested by Union minister Jairam Ramesh.

Ramesh recently wrote to Chief Minister Mayawati urging her to recommend a CBI inquiry but she had declined.

Though the CBI had already been probing the NRHM scam at the direction of the court, its inquiry was confined only to Lucknow. The agency had recently raided several places and seized documents relating to the scam.

It has been alleged in the PIL that the scam was worth Rs 3,000 crore and involved massive irregularities in the purchase of equipment for the primary health centres and other government hospitals and implementing schemes.

As many as two chief medical officers (CMO) had been killed in the past two years, who were responsible for the implementation of the scheme. A deputy CMO was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside the district jail and the police suspected that he might have been killed to destroy evidence against some “important” people.
