Metro rail service for tier-2 cities likely

The Union Urban Development Ministry has begun to prepare a detailed project report for Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Pune, Nagpur and Kochi in the first stage.

However the Ministry has also decided to have the metro rail in cities like Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Bhopal though these cities their populations fall below the cut-off criteria.

Kamal Nath told reporters that the Centre will bear 50 per cent of the cost of the preparation of the detailed project reports for the cities with 20 lakh plus population. Among the 19 cities which have more than 20 lakh population according to Census 2011, metro projects are under different stages of implementation in Bangalore, Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta, Hyderabad and Chennai.
