Last Updated 19 November 2011, 18:52 IST

“The response has been overwhelming. We are now gearing up to process the applications”, Food and Civil Supplies Secretary B A Harish Gowda said. The department on Friday had announced that it would start receiving online applications for new ration cards from Saturday. The department had stopped issuing new cards since last year.

Families in urban areas, which do not possess ration cards, can submit their application online through website http://ahara.kar.nic.in using a computer or avail of ‘online service’ at taluk offices or offices of the jurisdictional assistant director or deputy director of the department by paying a fee of Rs 10.

Those in rural areas need to furnish information through computers of their jurisdictional gram panchayat offices. Families in possession of ration cards and who have submitted their electricity meter RR number and their residential property tax number as sought by the department need not apply.
