Deepti, 15, was a student of Vidya Jyothi School on Begur Main Road in Hongasandra. She was the only child of her parents Dinesh and Pushpa, who hail from Kerala. The family has been living in the City for many years.

Deepti has left a one-and-half page death note in Kannada, explaining in detail about her dreams and becoming a famous dancer. She was not interested in studies and her headmistress in school had reprimanded her for not completing her home work. Mahesh, Deepti’s neighbour, saw thick smoke emanating from the house and broke open the door and found the girl in flames. He, along with others, tried to douse the fire but their efforts went in vain.

According to Subbanna, Madiwala sub-division Assistant Commissioner of Police, the parents were very attached to their daughter. During the day, Dinesh was summoned to the school and told about Deepthi’s lack of interest in studies. Both the parents work in a garment factory and Deepti used to carry a spare key to the school. On Monday, she came home, locked from inside and took the extreme step.

According to sources, Deepti was depressed for the last one week. She was punished in the school and made to stand outside the class. Despite that, she did not complete her home work. On Monday too, she was admonished by the teachers for the same reason.

Two more suicides

He was into plastic business. After his parents’ death, he was staying with his grandmother. On Monday morning, when his grandmother went to give him coffee, she found Satish’s body hanging from the ceiling.

In a similar incident, Ramanji, 19, who worked in a saloon, hanged himself to death at his KNP Layout house in Arakere on Monday. He was suffering from epilepsy. Around 1.30 pm, he took permission from the owner for lunch and never returned. When his brother Somasekhar went to find him, he saw him hanging.
