Bijapur had registered a record low temperature of seven degree centigrade last year. And weathermen predict that  record is likely to be sustained this year also, given the low mercury level at the very beginning of winter.

The residents of the town, hitherto, knew only two seasons - summer and blistering summer. A deluge wreaked havoc in 2009 and all the water bodies were filled to the brim. The situation is quite the opposite this year.

Failing rain

Rain has failed miserably and there has been an acute scarcity of water.
“We are new to winter season. We have to purchase warm clothes now,” Mallikarjuna, a resident said.

The vagaries of weather may cast an adverse effect on the cropping pattern, according to Dr H Venkatesh of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bijapur.

He said the yield depends on the local climate and significant decline in temperature would affect jowar yield in the district. However, wheat production would be satisfactory, he added.
