India face formidable Zambia

Last Updated 28 November 2011, 16:15 IST

Both the first-choice strikers are away for trials at Scottish giants Rangers, and coach Savio Medeira felt their absence has provided others an opportunity to prove themselves. But it’s not going to be easy to outperform a nation, ranked 79th in the world, almost 83 places above India in the FIFA rankings. However, the Indians would be a lot more confident side now with their 3-2 win over Malaysia recently.

Here as part of the golden jubilee celebration of the Goa Football Association, the Zambians showed their class with a 4-1 demolition of Goa XI on Sunday.

While the Indians will be using the match at the Nehru stadium to tune their squad for the SAFF Cup, the Zambians would look to prepare for the African Nations Cup in January.

Medeira is well aware of the Zambian challenge. “The match is very important for us. This is a great opportunity to gauge where we stand.”
