Remembered:A Dev Anand‘Dev Anand was stylish and well-read’

Yesteryear actress Vyjayanthimala remembers Dev Anand as a stylish and cultured co-star with whom she did the hit movie ‘Jewel Thief’.

She also reveals that in those days she used to crave to work with a tall actor and that Dev Anand “came along at the right time”.

Bollywood’s ‘Evergreen Star’ Dev Anand died of a heart attack in London on December 4. He was 88. “He was a bundle of energy always. It’s hard to imagine that he is no more. I first met him on the sets of Amar Deep. A really handsome man with impeccable manners. And yes, tall! I needed a tall hero. During my time I was supposed to be a tall heroine and I really craved to work with a hero who could be well-matched with me. Dev came along at the right time. And he was well-read, educated, cultured and erudite (sic),” she said.

“I went on to do a far more successful film ‘Jewel Thief’ with him. I don’t know what magic worked for that film. But our pairing is remembered to this day for ‘Jewel Thief’. I had shared some very good times with Dev and his brother Goldie (Vijay Anand) during ‘Jewel Thief’. We shot in the outdoors of Gangtok. That was fun,” she added.

“Then there was that song Hothon Pe Aisi Baat, which required inhuman amount of stamina and energy from me. I think the fact that I was working with Dev saab gave me that energy and stamina,” she said. “I remember after we finished shooting this song, Dev saab clapped.

He was a very generous co-star and a very stylish man. He was very particular about camera angles and wanted to be captured in the best possible way on screen. He took great care over his appearance. I think he defined celluloid heroism,” she added.

“I think I am the female Dev Anand,” said Vyjayanthimala, referring to the iconic star’s energy-level.

Family man

Sonu Nigam is a dedicated family man now but says he was a casanova once upon a time and had umpteen affairs and relationships.

“I have had lots of affairs and relationships in my life. There were times when my dad used to accompany me to a concert or tour and there always used to be some girl I had to meet,” the 38-year-old said on ETC’s ‘Bollywood Business’ recently.

Nigam, who has crooned hits like Kal Ho Na Ho, Saathiya and Do Pal, tied the knot with Madhurima in 2002 and they have a four-year-old son Nevaan.

Cautious: Yana GuptaLong battle with chronic eating disorder

Model Yana Gupta says she battled a chronic eating disorder and struggled for 16 years with the way she looked despite being conscious about fitness. She carried her own food to the places where she was invited for dinner and tried every diet, but her fear about her body remained, Yana says in her yet-to-be-released book, ‘How To Love Your Body And Get The Body You Love’.

She got the balance back in her life and gradually learnt to love herself, her publisher Penguin India quoted her as saying in a statement.

Using her own experiences, Yana offers, “easy eating advice and gives a lowdown on food from the right portions to eat to being healthy on the go”.

She advises on ways to understand nutrition labels, the “great dabba trick” and the best snack to eat when you get a late-night hunger attack. “One has to learn to love one’s body,” the model says. Yana has modelled for brands like Calvin Klein, Victoria’s Secret, Toyota, Honda, Sony, Limca and MTV.

‘Vishal is a mentor’

Actor Kunal Thakkur, who debuted with Vishal Bhardwaj’s film ‘The Blue Umbrella’, joined Nadira Babbar’s theatre group Ekjute on his recommendation. Later, he started doing television soaps like Mahabharat on 9x and played Ronit Roy’s son Arjan Mahitavanshi in Bandini. He was last seen on the TV soap Sarvgun Sampan.

Kunal attended the entire shoot of Omkara to learn the techniques of film-making and loves to play tennis during his free time. On how he got into tennis, he says, “I have been playing tennis for over 20 years. I started playing when I was seven and have played at the international level too. I trained under the world’s best coach Pancho Alvarino in Spain and also participated at the ITF tournaments in Spain. I was also the captain for my Maharashtra team and have won numerous state-level tournaments.” Recently, the actor even started a tennis academy at Goregaon Sports Club at Malad with popular tennis player Leander Paes inaugurating it. Vishal Bhardwaj was present at the event too.

Talking about his association with Vishal, Kunal says, “He is a mentor. He told me once to never run behind work, run behind the art and work will run after you. Those words were the greatest source of inspiration for me. I started my acting career with Vishal’s ‘The Blue Umbrella’ and he is a fantastic person. It’s great to play lawn tennis with him as he really enjoys the game and I have been training him for the last seven years.”

Who’s the most expensive?

With Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh Khan signed up to star in a project each for Yashraj Films, the production house is reportedly investing big bucks to keep the three superstars on its roster. There is some buzz among producers that Yashraj Films has committed to pay Salman Khan Rs 40 crore to star in director Kabir Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger, in addition to which the star will also receive a healthy share of back-end profits.

Aamir Khan, meanwhile, who will begin filming Dhoom 3 for the banner in 2012, is believed to be negotiating an even better deal. According to sources, a final number has not yet been arrived at, but the actor has allegedly asked for an unprecedented 60 per cent of the film’s net earnings as his acting fee.

Not to be outdone, Shah Rukh Khan — who will star in Yash Chopra’s next, scheduled for a Deepavali 2012 release — has reportedly said he feels “awkward” talking money with old friends. He is believed to have told his Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge producer Aditya Chopra that he won’t haggle over numbers, but expects to be paid exactly Rs one crore more than what the company is paying Aamir for Dhoom 3.
