DMK seeks solution to dam row

A DMK Executive Committee meeting here, chaired by party patriarch M Karunanidhi, called for serious introspection by both Kerala and Tamil Nadu, as both states are inter-dependent for socio-economic development.

“Therefore, all concerned should realise the fact that an amicable solution is not far-off if problems are approached, taking into consideration the bridges of relations between the two States and the compulsions of inter-dependence,” said party Treasurer M K Stalin, quoting from a six-page resolution adopted in the two-hour meeting.

The party, however, cautioned a section of the political class on either side, keen on giving the imbroglio a political twist, that “they should bear in mind that history will not forgive if the long historical relationship is harmed for narrow political gains.”

The party members have decided to observe a day-long fast across the state on December 12 to emphasise that “Tamils are second to none, at the same time, they will not subordinate anyone.”

The fast will be followed by a “mammoth human chain parade” on December 15 at Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram, where farmers depend on water from the dam for irrigation.

Demanding a resolute action from the Central and Kerala governments, Karunanidhi expressed dissatisfaction over the steps taken by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government in Tamil Nadu to end the impasse. “The Centre has taken no action at all which is regrettable,” The DMK supremo said. The Mullaperiyar dam is strong enough to hold water up to a height of 142 feet.

Karunanidhi also demanded deployment of CISF at the dam site by the Centre, instead of Kerala police, until a five-member panel appointed by the Supreme Court took a decision.
The DMK patriarch, however, declined to take the blame for not implementing the apex court’s orders during his regime in Tamil Nadu, describing such criticisms by political parties in the state as “unwarranted.”
