Keep minority education outside RTE, Cong asks PM

Last Updated 12 December 2011, 20:14 IST

The Congress delegation led by party general secretary Digvijay Singh met the Prime Minister and told him that minority education is covered under the Constitution and should therefore be exempted from the RTE.

“There are some issues under the Right to Education where the formulation of the syllabus and other things are contentious. That can be resolved by discussions with the minority institutions,” Singh, who is party in-charge of Uttar Pradesh affairs told reporters outside Parliament House.

The delegation also requested the Prime Minister to release the payment of Madrassa teachers that has been pending for nearly 3 years.

The plea from the Congress leaders to the Prime Minister came after a similar call to the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal failed to yield results.

“Now the payment of teachers for 2, 3 years has been pending and there was no resolution despite our meeting with the HRD minister,” Singh said.

“We met the Prime Minister for a solution to this problem and the Prime Minister has given directions to HRD Ministry and the Finance Ministry to give the payments immediately,” he said.
