The government said the man died in a private hospital early on Saturday because of respiratory problems. His swab samples were sent to the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, for testing. There had been no A(H1N1) influenza deaths here so far.

“It has not yet been confirmed as an  A(H1N1) influenza case, but we’re taking every precaution,” state’s nodal officer Dr Jose De Sa said.

He said the deceased, Shiva Murthy of Bangalore, was admitted to Manipal Hospital, Dona Paula, on Friday after he developed symptoms of pneumonia. He was put on ventilator and immediately administered Tamiflu.

The patient had a history of nephritis and diabetes and was hospitalised in Bangalore a month ago. The man had arrived in Goa three days ago to visit his son.
