At least 15 persons were also injured during the clashes which started on the football field in Rajarhat itself after the supporters of the defeated team apparently without any provocation attacked the supporters of the winners with bombs and guns, police said.

Ten persons have been arrested and more arrests are likely with police raids underway, DIG (Presidency Range), S N Gupta said.

When local people gathered at the scene, the attackers rushed to the nearby 'Vedic Village' resort to take shelter and the people set several cottages of the resort on fire. Some vehicles were also smashed in the arson.

"One person was killed and over 15 were injured in the clash. The injured were hospitalised. At least 30 cottages have been burnt and 10 fire tenders are trying to control the blaze," Gupta said.

IG (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha said all the tourists and the employees at the resort were safely evacuated immediately from the Vedic Village.

"There was no report of any foreign tourists being trapped in any of the cottages in the resort," he said.

"All senior officers have rushed to the spot including police and Rapid Action Force and the situation is now under control" Gupta added.

Trinamool Congress leader and Union minister of state for Shipping Mukul Roy, who visited the area following the incident claimed that the deceased was a TC supporter, who had gone there to watch the soccer match.
