Thej Kumar to fight for Grandmaster title in France

Ekalavya awardee Thej Kumar, if consistently fares at an average against grandmasters in France tournaments, would become the first grandmaster from Karnataka. The International Master already has to his credit three norms which is one of the eligibility to become a grandmaster. He would have to increase his rankings (rating) above 2,500 to clinch the title. Thej Kumar will be playing at Nancy and Bethune in France and play against top players from across the world.

His performance at national and international tournaments have remained consistently high in recent years. He won first place in the National Cities Chess Championship held at Nagpur and bagged third place in the 31st National Team Chess Championship held at Kochi this year. He also brought home laurels, placed third at the 49th National Challengers Championship at Aurangabad and 5th Mangalore FIDE rated tournament held in Mangalore this year.

The current FIDE rating of Thej Kumar is 2,450 and 50 points short to list for Grandmaster.

“I hope to achieve the 2,500 rating mark to bring honour to the state. The international tournaments at France will be crucial for me. Saanvi Technologies, run by Yashaswi Shankar and Savitha Yashaswi, which has been providing strategic support for developing staffing solutions are sponsoring Thej Kumar’s tournaments for the past five years, says C K Muralidarhan, a city-based sports writer and editor of mysoresports.com. Saanvi Technologies is promoting the sports website for Mysore.

Thej has represented Karnataka in national and international chess tournaments more than 15 times and represented the University of Mysore about five times and brought honour to the city.

Thej Kumar, who is the ace chess player from Karnataka has also plans to open a Chess Academy in city after his return from France. The academy will be opened in collaboration with www.mysoresports.com, he says.
