Police have arrested two Babbar Khalsa militants who were planning to assassinate political and religious leaders in Punjab and Haryana, allegedly with the backing of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

“They had conspired to assassinate religious leaders in Punjab and Haryana and also planned to target political leaders in Punjab during the Assembly elections,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Chand said on Friday. One of the arrests was made in Ropar by a joint police team from Punjab and Delhi and the other in Delhi on Thursday.
Police said the two Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) men were assigned to kill Ram Rahim Singh of Ambala in Haryana, Baba Piara Singh of Banihara in Punjab and Baba Ashutosh of Ludhiana in Punjab, apart from some political leaders in Punjab. The police, however, refused to name the politicians.

Ram Rahim Singh heads Dera Sacha Sauda, a religious order hit by controversy and violence in 2007 when its leader was seen in attire that seemed to resemble that of Guru Gobind Singh. Baba Piara Singh has written “Bhavsagar Granth”, offending some orthodox Sikhs. Baba Ashutosh of Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan, has come up with ‘radical’ views. The orders to kill came from BKI chief Wadhawa Singh, who is reportedly based in Pakistan for the last 15 years and has the backing of Pakistan’s Intelligence agency, ISI.  The two arrested militants, Sarabpreet Singh alias Prince and his childhood friend Jaswinder Singh, both 30 years old, were waiting for a consignment of assault rifles, rocket launchers and fake Indian currency from across the border to carry out the strikes, Chand said.
