Court issues notice to Maya in Rita arson case

Last Updated 25 August 2009, 18:56 IST

The notices were issued on a petition filed by Ms Joshi seeking a CBI inquiry into the matter. The case is presently being investigated by the CB-CID. While fixing October 13 as the next date of hearing of the matter, the court sought a progress report from the CB-CID.

Notices have been issued to Central government, principal secretary to governor and the UP government besides Mayawati.

In her petition, Ms Joshi has contended that the CB-CID could not conduct an impartial investigation into the case as the ruling party MLAs and police officials were involved in the torching of the house.

Alleged BSP supporters led by a BSP MLA had on July 15 torched the house of Ms Joshi in the state capital after her controversial statement against Chief Minister Mayawati in Moradabad.  Later, she was arrested by the police in Ghaziabad under SC/ST Act but was released on bail by a local court.
