Relief for farmers in rain-hit areas sought

Last Updated 12 May 2009, 17:11 IST

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday Sooryanarayana said mango groves were damaged in Srinivaspur, Chintamani, Kolar and Mulbagal taluks while the grape yards in Chikkaballapur district were razed to the grounds. Vegetables including tomato, capsicum, cauliflower and coriander were badly affected, he added. The natural disaster has caused great sufferings to the farmers who sowed but couldn’t reap, he regretted.

The general secretary urged the authorities concerned for conducting survey to estimate the total loss and provide assistance to the affected families as early as possible. The actions initiated by these authorities shouldn’t merely be an eyewash, but be vested with genuine interest in farmers’ welfare, he insisted.

Another demand that he put forth on this occasion was basic civic amenities to Srinivaspur Agriculture Produces Marketing Committee (APMC) yard. Lack of facilities including toilets, drinking water and road has caused inconvinience to the the farmers, traders and workers, he added.
