Lorry owners call off strike

Following assurance from medical education and district in-charge minister S A Ramdas, lorry operators who were on a strike protesting against the new sand policy for the past four days called off their strike on Thursday.

The minister, met the truckers at Mysore City Local Lorry Owners Association near Mysore-Nanjangud road, succeeded in buying peace. He assured sand permits would be issued, in a manner agreeable to both the parties. The lorry owners, who had earlier revolted opposing the decision to supply sand for Rs 7,500, finally obliged, with some changes.

They resolved to supply sand at the said cost only within city limits, while it would cost more to deliver sand to the outskirts of city. Besides, they sought three months’ time to fit their vehicles with geographical positioning system (GPS). Their request for opening booths to issue permits at the PWD office was also considered.
