The High Court has ordered notice to State Government in connection with a petition challenging the amendment of Karnataka Stamp Act, 1957.
The petitioners - VRL Group and others - had moved the High Court stating that the State Government way back in 1995 had amended Article 1 (II) of Karnataka Stamp Act 1957 and had acknowledged one per cent stamp duty.
However, the amendment was not implemented till recently.
Contrary
The petitioners submitted that the amendment is contrary to the Central Stamp Act, and since the matter was an inter-state issue, it requires the approval of the President, which has not been obtained.
