Last Updated 27 May 2014, 19:58 IST

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has dismissed the demands for starting 461 new pre-university colleges in State citing financial constraints.

At a meeting with Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar and other officials, the chief minister said it was impossible to consider the request.

The department sources said despite their best efforts to convince Siddaramaiah on the need to start these colleges, the proposal was not entertained.  The total requirement for starting these colleges was placed at Rs 250 crore.

At present, total number of junior colleges is 4,189, including government, aided, unaided and corporation colleges. Siddaramaiah has, however, agreed to consider starting 112 new government schools in the State. Officials said he has sought further information in this regard.

An allocation of Rs 630 crore has been sought for upgrading infrastructure in degree colleges across the State.
