Govt for reviving 'Janapada Jatre'

Last Updated 30 December 2011, 14:55 IST

The State Government is keen on reviving “Janapada Jatre,” launched for the first time in 2006, as part of Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, said Minister for Kannada and Culture Govind Karjol.

Speaking with mediapersons here on Friday, Karjol said a high-level committee had been
constituted to study different aspects to revive the once hugely popular programme with the slogan “Back to the village.” The programme had been launched to take folk culture of the villages, to the cities.

The Jatre was held every second Saturday and Sunday in front of the Vidhana Soudha, and every fourth Saturday and Sunday at Lalbagh. However, the Folk Festival was discontinued abruptly in 2007.

The minister ruled out renomination of members and chairpersons of various Academies affiliated to the Kannada and Culture department. The process of conducting elections to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat would be completed by February 26, he said.
