Lawyers from Defence Colony  will begin their new year by distributing fresh blankets and woollens to the homeless across five areas of Delhi, on Sunday. The distribution will begin by 6 pm from the Gurudwara in Defence Colony and continue till 9-10 pm.

In 2009, a group of lawyers had decided to collect funds from citizens who were willing to contribute to the cause of distributing fresh blankets, jackets and shawls among the homeless, who live on Delhi streets. The group started operating on a small scale and expanded later by inviting more members.

“We started with this aim of beginning a new year by spreading warmth and happiness in lives of those who may not be as fortunate as we are,” said H S Phoolka, a lawyer and convenor of this campaign.

The five places identified by the group for this campaign include Old Delhi Railway station where 300 homeless reside, Sarai Kale Khan which houses around 150 homeless, ISBT, Kashmere Gate which has around 500 homeless and Nehru Place flyover with over 100 homeless sleeping on the edges every night.

Phoolka adds that close to 25 lawyer associates have contributed to raise the funds. “Last year we gave away 2,000 blankets, 200 jackets and 100 shawls. This year we plan to provide around 2,000 items on the whole,” added Prabhsahay Kaur, another member of this initiative.

The group is happy with the way they are expanding as their neighbours and relatives also join hands when they get to know that the campaign has begun. There are close to 100 volunteers who distribute the items in different areas.
