'Educate children on renewable energies'

He was speaking at the inaugural function of cocurricular competitions organised for schoolchildren at St Philomena High School here by zilla panchayat and education department to mark Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Oorja Diwas to promote use of alternative and renewable energy sources on Saturday.

Stating that there have been tremendous research and development in use of solar energy, he said there is a need to educate children about the practical use of such renewable energies. He also visited the exhibition put up by students on alternative energy and encouraged the participants.

Planning director of the ZP Jagadish said crores of rupees worth foreign exchange is being spent on traditional energy sources like coal, diesel, petrol and kerosene. Apart from destroying our forests, use of traditional energy sources is a burden on our economy. So, it is high time we explored possibilities of making use of alternative energy.

Deputy director of education Chamaraj explained about the programmes being planned to popularise the concept of alternative energy. Assistant director for information Ramegowda, education officers Latha, Vedavathi and Bhanumathi were present on the occasion.
