Varicoloured, winsome, irresistible, these are few of the words which come in your mind when you visit Hauz Rani, an uncommon shopping place for home decors and accessories.

The small shops are lined right besides the road towards Saket’s Select Citywalk Mall from Malviya Nagar Metro Station. These shops stretch around 100-metre in the proximity of Hauz Rani village.

The place offers an unusual collection of handicrafts, collectibles, lamps and flower pots. The place offers accessories to suit the size and shape of a room, including one’s living habits, hobbies and personal taste.

The USP of each artwork like statues, sculptures, vases and wind chimes available for sale here is that they all are made of clay and soil.

“We make most of these products and merchandise on pottery wheels here at our home. But we also import from Rajasthan and Kolkata,” informs Raju, one of the shopkeepers.
These shops at Hauz Rani are older than 40 years. There were generations of successors carrying forward the art of creating home decorations.

Mahesh Kumar one of the shop owners, explains, “I am working in this profession since my childhood. My grandfather used to teach me how to use the pottery wheel to make a vase and statue.

Today, I produce all these statues and sculptures at my home and teach my children how to make vases, pots and other vessels.” He further adds, “Now a days, this line of work is not very beneficial, I am not able to sell a lot of work, the market was better before.” He adds explaining the complications and problems of the profession.

Another family member explained that their whole family of 20 members is involved in the same work of arts and they make a minimal amount of money to sustain their life.

“These days people are more interested in metal statues and sculptures. Statues of god and goddess made of clay are not in demand anymore.” says Dhani Ram, a shop owner here.

The products here vary from Rs 20 to Rs 2,000.  This place also provides you limitless opportunities to bargain at a shop unlike big shopping malls.
